Meet Dell Curry
Dell Curry arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1988 as the first player selected by the then new expansion Charlotte Hornets. Dell Curry, a sixteen (16) year veteran of the NBA has played for the following teams in his career, Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors.
Presently, Dell Curry serves as the Director of Player Programs for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats. He is renowned for working with youth, and youth initiatives. His commitment to youth-related issues is evident, not just by his words, but his deeds as well. Dell has been involved with or supported several youth organizations in the past, and has over the years expressed the desire to institute his own youth specific organization. His only regret is not having done so earlier in his career. In December of 1998, Dell Curry and Jeffrey A. Hood established the Dell Curry Foundation to aid and assist youth housed within many Charlotte, North Carolina low-income and underserved communities.
Dell is excited about the existence of the Foundation and its goals toward a more positive future generation. In April of 2006, Dell Curry, Jay Bilas and its Board of Directors decided to come together and partner together to form a new non-profit organization that will benefit Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s underserved community youth, Athletes United for Youth.
Dell was one of the premier three-point shooters and bench scorers in the NBA. An early mainstay of the Charlotte Hornets, he is the Hornets’ all-time leader in scoring, three-pointers and games played and was a perennial contender for the NBA Sixth Man Award, which he won in 1994. He signed with Milwaukee as a free agent in 1997-98 and moved on to the Toronto Raptors as a free agent prior to the 1999-2000 season.
Curry spent four explosive seasons at Virginia Tech, where he averaged 19.0 points for his career and 24.1 as a senior. In 1985 he was picked in the 14th round of the free-agent baseball draft by the Baltimore Orioles, but in 1986 he was chosen in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. Curry spent one season each in Utah and Cleveland before being picked by the Hornets.
