The 2009 Bojangles’ High School Basketball Shootout Tournament

Athletes United for Youth (AUFY) of Charlotte, a local non-profit, organization will host the 10th Anniversary Bojangles High School Basketball tournament in December.  The organization’s mission is to promote positive development for underserved youth in the Charlotte area.

AUFY’s partners - sixteen-year NBA veteran, Dell Curry & ESPN Analyst Jay Bilas - are pleased to announce the complete high school tournament field.  The three (3) day tournament is scheduled for December 28-30, 2009.  The first day of the tournament, December 28, 2009, will take place at the Grady Cole Center.  The second and third day of the tournament, December 29th and the finals, December 30th will take place at the Bojangles Coliseum.

This year’s Shootout will be regionally focused with some of the very best boys and girls high school basketball teams from North Carolina and South Carolina.  There will be both girls and boys brackets with a total of 16 teams. The field for 2009 is very strong based on the Preseason’s Basketball Sweet 16 ranking by The Charlotte Observer.    For the boys, five (5) out of eight (8) teams are ranked in the sweet 16.  Hopewell and the Cannon School are ranked 1 and 2 overall.  On the girl’s side, four (4) teams are ranked in the sweet 16.   Forestview in Gastonia is ranked #3 overall.

The boys and girls players to watch include some awesome regional and nationally ranked well-known players like Justin Cheek, Ardrey Kell HS, High Point signee; Jarell Eddie of the Cannon School, McDonald’s All-American nominee and Virginia Tech signee; Anthony Gill of Charlotte Christian, South Carolina signee; Elijah Hampton, JM Robinson HS, who averaged 20.8 ppts 6.2 rebounds as a Freshman; and Jordan Downing, Hopewell HS, Davidson signe

The most notable girls include Kelsey Harris, Gastonia Forestview, Elon signee; Shannon Smith, Gastonia Forestview, North Carolina signee;  Top 100, Class of 2012, Tiera Burk,  Hopewell HS, Share’e Boyd, Hopewell HS;  Christelle Shambo, Audrey Kell HS and Nicole Graham, Mallard Creek HS.

Athletes United for Youth is very excited about our 10 year anniversary and is looking forward to providing high quality competition and a wide variety of experiences for the players and the community.  In celebration of this 10 year milestone, AUFY is adding a student scholarship component to the tournament.  Athletes United for Youth will be providing one financial scholarship for a girl and one for a boy student athlete from each participating school based on established criteria.

The tournament is always an overwhelming success and has teams playing in front of “Sold-Out” crowds each day.  Last year, over 15,000 spectators were in attendance throughout the three (3) day tournament weekend.
